History
Formed in 1857 from Cooke County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Montague County was created on December 24, 1857, from Cooke County but was not fully organized until August 2, 1858. Throughout the 1860s and 1870s, multiple adjacent counties including Clay, Archer, Baylor, and others were temporarily attached to Montague for judicial purposes before being organized or detached.
