History
Formed in 1834 from Nacogdoches County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
San Augustine County was created from Nacogdoches in 1834 as a municipality established by Mexico, then became a county in the Republic of Texas in 1836. In 1835, San Augustine lost territory to the creation of Tenehaw (now Shelby) and Sabine, though it regained territory from Sabine in 1837. When Texas became a state in 1845, San Augustine County became a county in the newly established state.
