History
Founded in 1836
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Originally called Mina, the county was established as a municipality by Mexico in 1834 from Austin County and unorganized area. In 1836 it became a county in the Republic of Texas, and in 1837 it was renamed Bastrop after Felipe Enrique Neri. The county became part of the state of Texas in 1845 and has undergone several boundary adjustments since its creation, including losses to the creation of Fayette, Travis, Caldwell, and Lee counties.
