History
Formed in 1876 from Young County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Yoakum County was created from Young Territory on November 19, 1876, and named after Henderson King Yoakum. Initially not fully organized and attached to Young County, Yoakum was transferred for judicial purposes among Young, Throckmorton, Howard, Martin, and Terry counties between 1881 and 1905. The county was fully organized and detached from Terry County on December 31, 1907, and its western extent was explicitly extended to the Texas-New Mexico boundary in 1931.
