History
Formed in 1876 from Haskell County and Young County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Stonewall County was created on November 19, 1876, from Haskell County and Young Territory, but was not fully organized at that time. The county was named after Stonewall Jackson. Stonewall remained attached to other counties for judicial purposes for over a decade—to Young, then Throckmorton, then Jones—before being fully organized and detached from Jones on December 20, 1888.
