History
Formed in 1876 from Jack County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Bailey County was created from Young Territory on November 19, 1876, but was not fully organized and was initially attached to Jack County for judicial and other purposes. Over the following decades, Bailey County was successively detached from and attached to Jack, Baylor, Crosby, Hale, and Castro counties for judicial purposes before becoming fully organized and detached from Castro County on March 17, 1919. The county was named after Peter James Bailey Iii, and its western boundary was explicitly extended to the Texas-New Mexico border in 1931.
