History
Formed in 1876 from Tom Green County and Shackelford County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Mitchell County was created from Tom Green County and Young Territory on November 19, 1876, but was not fully organized until January 10, 1881, when it was detached from Shackelford County. Several neighboring counties were initially attached to Mitchell for judicial purposes before being organized or reassigned, including Andrews, Borden, Dawson, Gaines, Howard, Martin, Scurry, Garza, Kent, and Lynn.
