History

Founded in 1860

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Greer County was created by Texas in 1860 from Young Territory, though it was located entirely in present Oklahoma and was not fully organized. The county was attached to and detached from several Texas counties for judicial purposes over the following decades, and was fully organized by July 1886. In 1896, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Greer County was not within the boundaries of Texas but under U.S. jurisdiction, making it a county in Oklahoma Territory. Greer County became a county in the state of Oklahoma in 1907 after losing territory to the creation of Beckham and Jackson counties.
