History
Formed in 1848 from Bexar County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Gillespie County was created from Bexar County on February 23, 1848, and was fully organized on June 5, 1848. The county's boundaries changed significantly over the following decades as new counties were created from its territory: Burnet was created in 1852, Llano in 1856 and again received land in 1858, Mason in 1858, and Blanco in 1858. Kimble County was attached to Gillespie for judicial purposes in 1860 and fully organized and detached in 1876.
