History
Founded in 1837
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Gonzales was created as a municipality by Mexico in November 1832, then became a county in the Republic of Texas in March 1836. Its boundaries were defined in December 1837 but were adjusted multiple times after Texas statehood in 1845, with lands lost to the creation of neighboring counties including De Witt, Comal, Guadalupe, Lavaca, and Caldwell.
