History
Formed in 1876 from Jack County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Deaf Smith County was created from Jack Territory on November 19, 1876, but was not fully organized and remained attached to Jack County for judicial and other purposes. Over the following decades, the county was detached from Jack, then attached to Wheeler, then to Oldham for judicial purposes, while Parmer County was temporarily attached to Deaf Smith in 1891 before being fully organized and detached in 1907. Deaf Smith County was fully organized and detached from Oldham County on December 1, 1890. In 1931, the county's western boundary was explicitly extended to the Texas-New Mexico boundary at the 103rd meridian.
