History

Formed in 1840 from Red River County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Lamar County was created from Red River County in December 1840 by the Republic of Texas, though it was not fully organized until February 1841. The county lost and regained territory through the creation and dissolution of nearby judicial and proposed counties between 1841 and 1871. When Texas became a state in 1845, Lamar became one of its counties.
