History
Formed in 1852 from Cameron County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Hidalgo County was created from Cameron County on January 24, 1852, but remained unorganized until August 2, 1852. It lost territory to Nueces County in 1870, and again when Brooks and Willacy counties were created from it in 1911 and when additional land went to Willacy in 1921.
