History
Formed in 1835 from Nacogdoches County, Lafayette County and Miller County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Red River County was created by the Provisional Government of Texas from Nacogdoches County, though it overlapped with Arkansas counties Lafayette and Miller, resulting in competing territorial claims until Texas's boundaries were surveyed and confirmed in 1840. In 1836 it became a county in the Republic of Texas, and in 1845 it became a county in the state of Texas. The county lost territory in 1840 to the creation of Bowie and Lamar, in 1841 to Paschal, and in 1846 to Titus.
