History
Formed in 1856 from Nueces County and San Patricio County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Live Oak County was created on February 2, 1856, from Nueces, San Patricio, and a small area of Bexar Land District, and was named after Quercus fusiformis (live oak tree). The county was fully organized on August 4, 1856, but quickly lost territory: Bee County was created from it in 1857, and Duval and McMullen counties in 1858. Live Oak County experienced numerous boundary exchanges and attachments with neighboring counties throughout the 19th century, including temporary attachments of La Salle County for judicial purposes between 1866 and 1873.
