History
Formed in 1911 from Cameron County and Hidalgo County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Willacy County was created on March 11, 1911 from Cameron and Hidalgo counties, but was not fully organized until January 1912. In 1917, Willacy exchanged territory with Kleberg County. On April 2, 1921, Willacy was re-created and re-organized, gaining territory from Cameron and Hidalgo but losing most of its area to the creation of Kenedy County, retaining only a narrow strip along its original southern border. In 1947, the boundaries of Willacy County were extended to the continental shelf in the Gulf of Mexico.
