History

Formed in 1846 from Goliad County, Gonzales County and Victoria County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

DeWitt County was created from Goliad, Gonzales, and Victoria on March 24, 1846, but was not fully organized until July 13, 1846. The county was named after Green DeWitt. In 1848, DeWitt County exchanged territory with Goliad, and in 1854, it lost land to the creation of Karnes County.
