History
Formed in 1876 from Young County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Hockley County was created from Young Territory in 1876 but was not fully organized; it was initially attached to Young County for judicial and administrative purposes. Over the following decades, Hockley County was successively attached for judicial purposes to Baylor County in 1881, Crosby County in 1887, Hale County in 1889, and Lubbock County in 1891. Hockley County was fully organized and detached from Lubbock County on February 19, 1921, though it temporarily served as the judicial seat for Cochran County from 1921 until Cochran's full organization in 1924.
