An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Scurry County was created from Young Territory on November 19, 1876, but was not fully organized initially and was attached to Shackelford County for judicial and other purposes. The county was detached from Shackelford County and attached to Mitchell County in 1881, then fully organized and detached from Mitchell in 1884. Garza and Kent counties were later attached to Scurry County for judicial purposes in 1885, though Kent became fully organized and detached in 1892, and Garza was detached and attached to Borden County in 1893.
