History
Formed in 1846 from Harrison County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Upshur County was created from Harrison County on April 27, 1846, and fully organized by July 13 of that year. The county was named after Abel P. Upshur. Over subsequent decades, Upshur lost territory to the creation of Gregg County in 1873 and Camp County in 1874, then gained back area from Gregg County in 1882 to meet constitutional requirements for distance between county seats.
