History

Formed in 1858 from Starr County and Webb County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Zapata County was fully organized on April 26, 1858, less than three months after its creation. Over the following decades, the county experienced significant boundary changes: it lost territory to Duval, Encinal, and Webb in 1870, gained a small area from Webb in 1871, lost additional territory with the creation of Brooks County in 1911, and gained another small area from Webb in 1921 when the true boundary line between the counties was established.
