History
Formed in 1876 from Jack County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Hartley County was created on November 19, 1876, but remained unorganized and was attached to Jack County for judicial and administrative purposes until being transferred to Wheeler County in 1879. The county was successively attached to Oldham County in 1881, then became fully organized in January 1891 when it detached from Oldham, subsequently serving as judicial seat for Dallam County until Dallam fully organized and separated in July 1891. In 1931, Hartley County's western boundary was formally extended to the Texas-New Mexico border at the 103rd meridian.
