History
Formed in 1876 from Young County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Terry County was created from Young Territory on November 19, 1876, but was not fully organized at first and remained attached to Young County for judicial and administrative purposes. Over the following decades, Terry County was successively attached to Throckmorton, Howard, and Martin counties for judicial purposes as these attachments changed. Terry County became fully organized and independent on June 28, 1904, when it was detached from Martin County. The county is named after Benjamin Franklin Terry.
