History
Formed in 1876 from Young County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Cochran County was created from Young Territory on November 19, 1876, but remained unorganized and attached to Young County for judicial and administrative purposes. Over the following decades, Cochran was successively attached for judicial purposes to Young, Baylor, Crosby, Hale, Lubbock, and Hockley counties as boundary arrangements changed. The county became fully organized and detached from Hockley County on December 31, 1924, and its western boundary was explicitly extended to the Texas-New Mexico state line in 1931.
