History

Founded in 1858

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Wilbarger County was created on February 1, 1858, from Young Territory but was not fully organized at that time. For more than two decades, the county was attached to neighboring counties for judicial purposes, including Montague, Young, Clay, and Baylor, before becoming fully organized and detached from Baylor on October 10, 1881. In 1883, Cottle and Hardeman counties were temporarily attached to Wilbarger for judicial purposes, but Hardeman became fully organized and detached in 1884, followed by Cottle in 1885.
