History
Formed in 1856 from Coryell County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Brown County was created from the Travis Land District and from non-county area attached to Coryell County, though it was not fully organized at first. The county was named after Henry Stevenson Brown. Brown was fully organized in May 1858 after gaining additional territory from the Travis Land District and Coryell County. The county's boundaries changed several times: it lost territory to the creation of Coleman County in 1858 and Mills County in 1887.
