History

Formed in 1840 from Red River County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Bowie County was created on December 17, 1840, from Red River County and became fully organized in 1841. In 1842, the county gained territory from Paschal Judicial County when the Republic of Texas Supreme Court ruled judicial counties unconstitutional. In 1845, Bowie became a county in the newly-established state of Texas and subsequently lost territory to the creation of Cass and Titus counties in 1846.
