Roosevelt County was created on February 28, 1903, by New Mexico Territory from parts of Chaves and Guadalupe counties. In 1909, Roosevelt County lost territory to the creation of Curry County, and in 1917, it gained land from Chaves County while losing territory to the creation of De Baca County.
