History

Formed in 1825 from Decatur County and Irwin County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Thomas County was created on December 23, 1825, from Decatur and Irwin counties and named after Jett Thomas. The county gained territory from Lowndes County in 1826 and lost portions to several newly created counties: Colquitt in 1856, Brooks in 1858, and Worth in 1854.
