History

Formed in 1858 from Emanuel County, Laurens County and Washington County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Johnson County was created on December 11, 1858, from parts of Emanuel, Laurens, and Washington counties. The county was named after Herschel V. Johnson. Over the following years, Johnson County's boundaries shifted through exchanges with Emanuel and Laurens counties, including small adjustments in 1860, 1862, 1866, 1874, 1875, and 1876.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
