History

Founded in 1818

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Habersham County was created from non-county area on December 15, 1818, and quickly exchanged territory with Franklin County. Over the following decades, the county's boundaries changed through losses to the creation of Rabun County in 1828, Cherokee County in 1831, Hall County in 1845, Lumpkin County in 1853, and White County in 1858.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
