History
Founded in 1821
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Houston County was created from Non-County Area on May 15, 1821, and named after John Houstoun. The county lost land to the creation of Bibb and Crawford in 1822, Pulaski in 1828, and Macon in 1837, but also gained territory from Macon, Crawford, and Dooly through the 1870s.
