History

Formed in 1832 from Cherokee County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Murray County was created on December 3, 1832, from Cherokee County. Over the following two decades, the county lost land to the creation of Walker County in 1833, Cass County (now Bartow) in 1834, Whitfield County in 1851, Gordon County in 1852, and Fannin County in 1854, though it later regained some territory from Gordon and Fannin.
