History
Founded in 1777
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Liberty County was created on February 7, 1777, from St. Andrew Parish, St. James Parish, and St. John Parish as one of Georgia's original counties. Throughout the following decades, Liberty County's boundaries shifted significantly as surrounding counties were created and territory was transferred, including major changes in 1789 when sea islands were lost to Glynn County, and in 1793 when land was lost to the creation of Screven, Bryan, and McIntosh counties. After these early adjustments, Liberty County experienced smaller boundary changes with McIntosh and Tattnall counties through the 19th century, with the last significant gain from McIntosh County in 1871.
