History

Formed in 1801 from Jackson County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Clarke County was named after Elijah Clarke and created on December 5, 1801. The county's boundaries changed several times through the 19th century, losing territory to the creation of Greene, Madison, Walton, and Oconee counties, and gaining small areas from Jackson and Madison.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
