History

Formed in 1831 from Lee. County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Sumter County was created from Lee County and named after Thomas Sumter. Between 1850 and 1862, the county experienced multiple boundary adjustments with its neighbors Marion, Lee, Macon, and Schley, including a loss to Schley in 1857 that was later refined and partially reversed.
