History

Formed in 1811 from Clarke County, Elbert County, Jackson County and Oglethorpe County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Madison County was created from Clarke, Elbert, Jackson, and Oglethorpe counties in 1811. Throughout the 19th century, Madison gained and exchanged land with neighboring counties including Elbert, Clarke, Jackson, and Oglethorpe, and lost territory to Hart County in 1863.
