History

Founded in 1777

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Burke County was created in 1777 from St. George Parish as one of Georgia's original counties. The county was named after Edmund Burke. Burke County lost territory over time through the creation of several new counties: Columbia in 1790, Screven and Warren in 1793, Jefferson in 1796, Jenkins in 1905, and a small area to Richmond in 1841.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
