History
Formed in 1784 from Wilkes County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Franklin County was created on February 25, 1784, from Wilkes County. Over the following decades, the county exchanged land with neighboring counties including Jackson, Habersham, Hall, and Hart, with the creation of Hart County in 1853 resulting in the loss of a portion of Franklin County.
