History

Formed in 1796 from Franklin County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Jackson County was created on February 11, 1796 from Franklin County and named after James Jackson. The county's boundaries shifted multiple times over the following decades, losing territory to the creation of Clarke, Madison, and other counties, while gaining small adjustments from neighboring counties to accommodate private individuals.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
