History

Founded in 1777

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Wilkes County was created on February 7, 1777, from St. Paul Parish and Non-County Area as one of Georgia's original counties, with St. Paul Parish eliminated. Over the following decades, Wilkes County lost territory to the creation of Franklin, Washington, Elbert, Oglethorpe, Warren, Lincoln, and Taliaferro counties, though it later gained small amounts of land back from Greene, Lincoln, and Taliaferro counties.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
