History

Formed in 1822 from Fayette County, Gwinnett County and Henry County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

DeKalb County was created in 1822 from parts of Fayette County, Gwinnett County, and Henry County. It was named after Johann de Kalb, and its boundaries shifted several times over the following decades as areas were gained from and lost to neighboring counties. In 1853, DeKalb County lost territory to the creation of Fulton County.
