History

Formed in 1832 from Cherokee County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Gilmer County was created from Cherokee County on December 3, 1832. Over the following decades, Gilmer County was reduced through the creation of Pickens, Fannin, and Dawson counties, and through boundary transfers to adjacent counties.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
