History
Formed in 1793 from Greene County and Washington County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Hancock County was created from Greene and Washington counties. The county lost territory to Baldwin in 1807 and to the creation of Taliaferro in 1825, with further losses to Taliaferro in 1828. A small gain from Washington in 1830 involved a boundary adjustment to the centerline of a road over Buffalo Creek.
