History
Founded in 1777
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Effingham County was created on February 7, 1777, from St. Matthew Parish and St. Philip Parish as one of Georgia's original counties. Over the following decades, the county lost land to the creation and expansion of neighboring counties: Screven County in 1793, Bryan County in 1793 and again in 1794, and a small area to Chatham County in 1850.
