History

Formed in 1825 from Irwin County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Lowndes County was created from Irwin County in 1825. Over the following decades, it lost territory to the creation of several new counties: Thomas in 1826, Clinch in 1850, Berrien in 1856, Colquitt in 1856, Brooks in 1858, and Echols in 1858. The county also gained small areas from Berrien in 1857 and 1864, and from Echols in 1860.
