History

Founded in 1825

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Section the Fourth (now Coweta County) was created on June 9, 1825, from Fayette County and Non-County Area. It was renamed Coweta County on December 11, 1826, and gained territory from DeKalb County. Over the following decades, the county's boundaries shifted through gains from Troup and Meriwether counties and losses to the creation of Campbell and Heard counties.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
