History

Formed in 1857 from Baker County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Mitchell County was created from Baker County in 1857 and named after Henry Mitchell and David Brydie Mitchell. The county gained a small area from Thomas County in 1859 to accommodate a private individual, then lost a small area to Colquitt County in 1873.
