History

Formed in 1793 from Wilkes County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Oglethorpe County was created from Wilkes County on December 19, 1793, and named after James Oglethorpe. The county gained and exchanged territory with Greene County between 1794 and 1799, and lost land to the creation of Madison County in 1811 and Taliaferro County in 1825. Additional boundary adjustments with Madison County occurred in 1831 and 1841, with Oglethorpe gaining territory from Madison County by 1970.
