History

Formed in 1827 from Muscogee County and Troup County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Meriwether County was created on December 14, 1827, from Muscogee and Troup counties. Over the following decades, the county's boundaries were adjusted multiple times through exchanges with neighboring counties including Coweta, Talbot, and Harris, with most changes involving small areas to accommodate private individuals or redefined district lines.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
